Olympian gold medalist Gabby Douglas, “The Flying Squirrel“, received the highest honor at the Women’s Sports Foundation, the Sportswoman of the Year award. The young gymnast beat out tennis all-star Serena Williams, swimmer Missy Franklin and many other leading ladies in sports!
Douglas, a member of the “Fierce Five” USA gymnastic dream team for this past year’s London 2012 Olympic Summer Games was crowned the first African American woman to be named best all around for gymnastics in history! She is the third gymnast to win this award following Olympic gold medalists Mary Lou Retton (1984) and Nastia Liukin (2008).
Gabby Douglas is also set to release a memoir that reveals her struggle to greatness entitled,”Grace, Gold and Glory: My Leap of Faith.”
Douglas explains, “It’s mainly about my story and where I came from. What I want people to take away is I want them to be motivated and inspired.”
We’d like to say congratulations to Gabby for doing great things, being an inspiration to girls everywhere and continuing to put all those critics to shame !
